INSTALLING NATURAL STONE

ADHESIVE MATERIALS

In order to achieve a correct installation, it is of vital importance to select appropriate adhesive materials. Prevent usage of traditional cement mortars when installing natural stone.

Following is a list of the various types of appropriate adhesives, with the corresponding European norms listed (UNE-EN-12004):

TYPE NAME PRODUCT EXAMPLES
C2 IMPROVE ADHESIVES KERAKOLL H40 FLOTEX or H40 MAXI
D DISPERSANT CO-POLYMER ADHESIVES KERAKOLL UNIVERSAL or KERAKOLL ELASTIC
R REACTIVE RESIN ADHESIVES KERAKOLL SUPERFLEX

Reactive Resin Adhesives should be the adhesive materials utilized in order to achieve a correct installation.Occasionally, it is necessary to utilize adhesives which allow the application of a thick coat in order to adapt to the natural stone’s variations in thicknesses (Kerakoll’s H40 MAXI).

In these cases it is suggested to consult the adhesive material’s manufacture regarding their recommendations on usage.

INITIAL CLEANING

It is recommended to clean the stone before installation. If it is not cleaned, there is a possibility that the superficial protective coatings and/or the adhesive materials utilized do not allow one to obtain the desired results.

FINAL INSTALLATION CLEANING

It is fundamental to perform a good final installation clearing with a product such as DETERDEK. Use this product to remove any residues (such as adhesives, grouts, or the stone’s own dust).

It is also recommended to wait 4 or 5 days before applying any sealants (so that the material is completely dry).

PROTECTION

Water absorption is prevented with the utilization of an impermeable coating.

For stone installed on walls (exterior facades), applying a water-resistant treatment such as HYDROREP would suffice.

For installations utilizing stone for exterior pavements, an anti-stain water-resistant treatment is recommended.

Depending upon the final effect desired, FILAWET (wet look), FILA STONE PLUS (enhancer), or FILA W68 (natural effect) may be used as anti-stain protectors.

For interior pavement stone installations, it is possible to apply a wax in various finishes (matte, satin and shiny), all of which aid the stone’s maintenance, as well as help lengthen the life of the stone.

 NOTES:

1. Slate is an exfoliating material. In other words, composed of fine sheets or layers which occasionally can break without altering the material qualities.

2.The pieces’ natural surface implies variations in the thickness which give character and beauty to the material.

3.This product is designed to be installed without grout joint.

4.In the surface appear holes inherent in travertine. In the case of wanting to seal them for aesthetic motives, we recommend grout in beige tones.

5. Before installing in areas of heavy traffic, consult the adequate thickness with your sales representative.

6.We recommend a minimum grout joint of 1.5 mm.
